The Canada Lake Ontario Shirt is a direct response to the debate over the lake’s name that has recently erupted. On August 27, 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order renaming Lake Ontario to “Lake America” on the U.S. federal geographic names system, amid trade tensions with Canada.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that Canadians would continue to call it Lake Ontario – a name with its roots in the Wendat word Ontari’io. New York Governor Kathy Hochul also said the state would not use the new name. The lake lies between Ontario and New York, with approximately 52% of its water surface area belonging to Canada.
